The terrace roof at the Brighton Hippodrome had reached the end of its life. The covering had failed and the timber structure underneath had gone rotten, leaving the building open to water ingress. A patch repair was never an option here. The roof needed stripping back and rebuilding from the deck up.
We stripped the old covering and cut out the rotten structure beneath it, then rebuilt the deck so the new system had a sound, level base to sit on. Getting that stage right matters more than anything that follows, because a felt roof is only ever as good as the deck underneath it.
We finished with a 3-layer built-up felt system. Built-up felt is still the right specification for a large terrace roof: it takes foot traffic, it tolerates the movement you get across a big roof area, and it has decades of proven performance in the British climate. On a building like this one, where the roof has to be dependable and hard-wearing rather than decorative, nothing else makes more sense.
The Hippodrome now has a terrace roof that is watertight, structurally sound, and built to take everything the Brighton weather throws at it.
